Blood Pressure Calculator: Normal, High, Low

Entering systolic and diastolic numbers in the calculator to quickly determine if your blood pressure readings are normal, low, pre-hypertension, hypertension stage 1, hypertension stage 2, or emergency.

Blood Pressure Readings

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is given as 2 figures:

  • Systolic pressure (SYS): the upper number – the pressure when your heart pushes blood out.
  • Diastolic pressure (DIA): the lower number – the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

For example, if your blood pressure is "140 over 90" or 140/90mmHg, it means you have a systolic pressure of 140mmHg and a diastolic pressure of 90mmHg.

What Is Low Blood Pressure?

Low blood pressure, also known as hypotension, is characterized by abnormally low blood pressure readings. Specifically, hypotension is diagnosed when the systolic blood pressure is below 90 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and the diastolic blood pressure is below 60 mmHg.

What Is Normal Blood Pressure?

Normal blood pressure is typically considered to be a systolic reading between 90 and 120 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and a diastolic reading between 60 and 80 mmHg.

What Is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a serious health condition where the force of blood pushing against your blood vessel walls is consistently too high. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is categorized into stages.

  • Pre-hypertension is a stage where blood pressure readings are higher than normal but not yet in the hypertensive range. Specifically, pre-hypertension is characterized by systolic blood pressure readings between 121 and 139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure readings between 81 and 90 mmHg.
  • Stage 1 hypertension is characterized by systolic blood pressure readings between 140-159 mmHg and diastolic readings between 91-99 mmHg.
  • Stage 2 hypertension, the systolic pressure ranges from 160-179 mmHg, while the diastolic pressure falls between 100-119 mmHg.

What's Considered Emergency Blood Pressure?

Hypertensive crisis is a medical emergency where blood pressure is extremely high. Specifically, a systolic blood pressure (the top number) greater than 180 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) greater than 120 mmHg constitutes a hypertensive crisis. This condition requires immediate medical attention to prevent potential complications such as stroke, heart attack, or kidney failure.
